Last fall, I had the honor of supporting an amazing project for the Virginia War Memorial, where a team of us traveled the state photographing and interviewing 50 Virginia Vietnam Veterans. The "50 Years Beyond: The Vietnam Veteran Experience" exhibit that is currently on display in the War Memorial in Richmond, VA, until 2024.
It is with a heavy heart that I recently learned that we lost our second Vietnam Veteran, from this esteemed group of fifty. Mr. John "Jack" Frazer, passed away 10 August, 2023.
With this blog post I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my brief encounter with Mr. Frazer, through the images I captured during our session last August. He was very positive and excited to be participating in our project.
During his year in Vietnam he was assigned with the 1st Aviation Brigade, 44th Assault Helo Company where he flew UH-1 helicopters and fondly referred to them as "flying taxicabs" or "flying trucks."
"I flew over 1100 hours; it was an interesting experience on many levels. We lost a lot of people, we lost a lot of aircraft."
"Through luck, timing or whatever - karma- I've been fortunate to have a good life. Like the Beatles said - It's been a long and winding road - but I'm here."
Thank you for your service Mr. Frazer, Rest in Peace Sir. We have the Watch.
