"The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example." —Benjamin Disraeli
Fifty years ago, on 27 January 1973, the United States, South Vietnam, Viet Cong and North Vietnam formally signed “An Agreement Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam” in Paris.
On the evening of 27 January 2023, the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond, Virginia, welcomed the namesakes of their newest exhibit commemorating Virginia's Vietnam Veterans.
The exhibit "50 Years Beyond: The Vietnam Veteran Experience" celebrates and showcases 50 Virginia Vietnam Veterans through their war artifacts, quotes, a QR code to access their interviews and life size current day black and white portraits.
I was overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the exhibit, not because I captured their portraits, but because an entire team of dedicated Americans came together to showcase 50 untold legacies.
The reactions from the Veterans and their families was priceless and I was truly moved and humbled to be a part of the evening festivities.
A special thank you to Dr. Clay Mountcastle for the opportunity to serve, Pamela Hart Vines for sharing her amazing cinematography, and the Virginia War Memorial Foundation, Inc. board of directors and staff for bringing the vision quickly to life.
If you find yourself passing through Richmond, VA please consider stopping in to see the exhibit which is accessible all year long, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 4 p.m, 621 South Belvidere Street in downtown Richmond.
